In surveys of the public, scientists are generally described as being very competent.66 The most frustrating thing about the errors documented in this chapter is that the overwhelming majority of scientists do indeed know better. They know to check thoroughly for typos and other slip-ups, they know about the importance of randomisation and blinding, and they know (and have known since the 1950s) that contamination of cell lines is a grave problem for fields like oncology.
