Caste is fixed and rigid. Race is fluid and superficial, subject to periodic redefinition to meet the needs of the dominant caste in what is now the United States. Caste is also fluid or at least as fluid as race. This book seems to make the assumption that race is an old concept. Race as we use it today grew with the inception of slavery in the Americas.
