“I only knew how to break yours with Jaxon because I’m the one who created it.”
“I never imagined that it was off because it should never have existed in the first place.”
“Yes, I definitely smell the gargoyle in you, but…” She sniffs again. “I was referring to something else. Something much more ancient. What were your parents?”
Hudson jokes. “I didn’t think you had it in you.” “That’s the problem,” I tease. “Everybody always underestimates me.”
He gives me a mild look. “How about you play throw the ax at the dragon instead?” “Hey now,” Flint yelps. “No need to get violent. I mean, I know Eden is a lot, but she’s still a person.”

“It was into this chaos, this disorder, these extremes of love and hate, that you—that all gargoyles—were born.”
“Since gargoyles were created from the source of all magic, instead of from chaos or order, you hold both within you, Grace. A desire to create order, a desire to create chaos. Always at war but also always in harmony. It’s this ability that allows you to straddle both worlds, become a beacon of peace for both sisters’ creations. It’s also what helps you channel magic from both sides.
I tell him, picking it up and rolling it back and forth against my palm. It’s surprisingly hot for a stone that wasn’t being touched.
“But if you want another prophecy, here’s one. This isn’t the last time we’ll see each other, Grace. But it’s going to be a rocky road for both of us before we do.”
