As college-educated professionals became a more and more important Democratic constituency, the general reluctance on the left to try anything too crazy also grew. In the 1970s and ’80s that was understandable, but the left learned the lesson too well, and by the ’90s it became a very bad habit, especially unattractive as a default posture among the liberal well-to-do—restraint helping out the less-lucky majority but reckless on big business and the rich getting their way.
