Aristotle promulgated a rather similarly striated notion of human inequality, arguing that the “relation of male to female is by nature a relation of superior to inferior and ruler to ruled. The same must of necessity hold in the case of human beings generally.” This, Aristotle argued, justified natural slavery: “those who are as different from other men as the soul from the body or man from beast . . . are slaves by nature.”19
