At six-two, he was just tall enough. Devyn loved her brother, but he was a freaking giant. She wasn’t exactly short herself at five-eleven, making Lucky the perfect height for her.
And she loved her older brother. All of his friends called him Grover because their last name was Groves, but to her, he was just Fred.
Fred had been the one to keep her company in the hospital. He didn’t seem to mind sitting in her small room playing stupid board games for hours on end. He was the one who read to her. Who sang her to sleep before he left. He was her rock.
When she moved, she’d lied to everyone. Her boss hadn’t hit on her. Hadn’t pushed her and given her the bruise Kinley had seen when they’d helped her move into this apartment. Her brother had.
You know your brother and I, and the rest of the team, will do whatever it takes to slay your dragons.” “I know.” And she did.
“I already feel as if you’re my brother, but if you were my brother legally, I’d be fucking thrilled. And if you can figure out what’s going on with Devyn and make the light come back to her eyes, I’ll be forever in your debt.”
if they ever got to the point where they were a couple. And he wanted that. To be taken into her confidence…and to be able to call Devyn his. He’d wanted that almost since the moment he’d laid eyes on her.
Something was bothering her, and he desperately wanted to know what it was. Not to fix it for her, but to help her come up with a solution. Together.
“Holy shit, Lucky’s a total softie,” Devyn murmured. “Shhhhh, don’t tell anyone,” he joked.
Devyn couldn’t help but stare at his perfect ass as she followed. She hoped she wasn’t drooling.
“So, you’ll go out with me?” Lucky asked with a smile. “Yeah.” One word. But it would change her life forever. She knew it.
Devyn sniffed. Hard. “You’re making me cry, bitch,” she told Aspen. “Good. Because I’ve cried more in the last couple months than I have in years. These pregnancy hormones are no joke.”
“You can have any damn thing of mine you want.” “Including you?” she asked. “Damn,” Lucky said under his breath. “Yes, Dev. I’m fucking yours. I’ve been yours from the moment I met you. I’ve just been waiting for you to catch up.”
I have a feeling once I’ve got you in my lair, I’m not going to want to let you go.” She grinned. “I have to work tomorrow afternoon.” “Damn,” he said again.
It wasn’t an either/or kind of thing. They could be fathers and husbands, and be kick-ass Delta Force soldiers. Loving someone didn’t make them weaker; in a lot of ways, it made them better at their job.
If you’re good and eat something healthy, I’ll stop and get some doughnuts on my way home. ~Lucky PS. I liked having you in my bed last night…and this morning. I think we need to make this a habit.
But anything you want, I’ll bend over backward to get for you because most of all, I want you to be happy.
She ate just about anything…except strawberry icing. It was just fundamentally wrong to put fruit icing on a doughnut.
He smelled divine. Whatever soap or body wash he used made her want to crawl into his lap and latch on and never let go.
“How’d I get so lucky?” Devyn asked. Lucky grinned. “Did you mean that as a pun?” he asked. Devyn laughed. “Actually, no, but if the shoe fits.”
“You gonna admit that your hearing is fine?” she asked, her fingers slipping under his shirt to increase the torture factor of her tickling. “Yes! Anything! Please, for the love of God, stop!” “Holy crap, you call yourself a Delta soldier?” she asked as her fingers finally stilled.
“It originated in World War One. Fighter pilots referenced the rear of the airplane as the six o’clock position. If you think about a clock face, and you’re standing in the middle, twelve o’clock is in front of you, three is to your right, nine to your left, and six is behind you. On a battlefield, your ‘six’ is the most vulnerable position because you don’t have eyes in the back of your head. So when someone says they have your six, they mean they’re watching your back.”
“You never know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice you have,”
“I love you, Dev. So damn much. I know talking about stuff is hard, but you have nothing to fear from me. I’ll never judge you or think badly because of how you’re feeling. You can always talk to me. About anything. I’ll protect your heart as well as your body.”
