At six-two, he was just tall enough. Devyn loved her brother, but he was a freaking giant. She wasn’t exactly short herself at five-eleven, making Lucky the perfect height for her.
And she loved her older brother. All of his friends called him Grover because their last name was Groves, but to her, he was just Fred.
When she moved, she’d lied to everyone. Her boss hadn’t hit on her. Hadn’t pushed her and given her the bruise Kinley had seen when they’d helped her move into this apartment. Her brother had.
“I already feel as if you’re my brother, but if you were my brother legally, I’d be fucking thrilled. And if you can figure out what’s going on with Devyn and make the light come back to her eyes, I’ll be forever in your debt.”
He didn’t mind passing on pertinent information about Devyn’s health and well-being to Grover right now, but it would seem too much like breaking a confidence if he shared too much, if they ever got to the point where they were a couple. And he wanted that. To be taken into her confidence…and to be able to call Devyn his. He’d wanted that almost since the moment he’d laid eyes on her.
Something was bothering her, and he desperately wanted to know what it was. Not to fix it for her, but to help her come up with a solution. Together.
“So, you’ll go out with me?” Lucky asked with a smile. “Yeah.” One word. But it would change her life forever. She knew it.
“You can have any damn thing of mine you want.” “Including you?” she asked. “Damn,” Lucky said under his breath. “Yes, Dev. I’m fucking yours. I’ve been yours from the moment I met you. I’ve just been waiting for you to catch up.”
Thanks for forcing your way into my apartment and making me food I didn’t ask for.” “You’re welcome. I might not always be the most socially acceptable man, but I’ll always do what’s best for you. And tonight you needed to be forced out of the funk you put yourself in. To see that you’ve got friends who will gladly be there for you…if you’ll let us.”
“Someone who will support him no matter what. Someone who looks at him as if the sun rises and sets with him, but at the same time, knows her own worth. A woman who’s independent and can fend for herself and their kids, if they have them, when he gets deployed. She should have a sense of humor and not take herself too seriously. But most of all, I think Grover needs someone strong. Outgoing. Who isn’t afraid to stand up to him or anyone else who might think they can give her shit.”
“It means we’ve got your back,” Lucky told her. “It originated in World War One. Fighter pilots referenced the rear of the airplane as the six o’clock position. If you think about a clock face, and you’re standing in the middle, twelve o’clock is in front of you, three is to your right, nine to your left, and six is behind you. On a battlefield, your ‘six’ is the most vulnerable position because you don’t have eyes in the back of your head. So when someone says they have your six, they mean they’re watching your back.”
“You never know how strong you are, until being strong is the only choice you have,”
“I love you, Dev. So damn much. I know talking about stuff is hard, but you have nothing to fear from me. I’ll never judge you or think badly because of how you’re feeling. You can always talk to me. About anything. I’ll protect your heart as well as your body.”
