“So, are we ever gonna talk about what happened between you and Orion in that tomb?” he asked out of the blue and my heart jolted. “What?” I blurted, heat rushing up to my cheeks. “Nothing happened.” Great, that sounded really convincing.
“You mean when he sacrificed himself for you so you might have a chance to take down Lionel? So that you wouldn’t lose everything including your place at the one academy capable of training up a Fae of your power level and giving you a real chance for the throne? By the stars, what an asshole,” he growled mockingly and I pursed my lips. “No, you’re right, Darcy. I won’t stand for it. How dare he throw himself into the most dangerous place in Solaria and face months of hell in Darkmore because of how much he loves you? How fucking dare he.”
“How dare he ruin himself as far as any Fae can possibly ruin themselves for you.”
Max: I stole all the bagels from the school supply and stashed them in my room. If she wants breakfast tomorrow, she has to come. Literally.
Darcy: Hey, I’ll be over at 7. Darius thought it would be best if someone is there with you. P.S. Full moon woo! Full. Moon. Woo??
Starboy: And Darius thought the best someone would be you? P.S. I think you’re spending too much time with Werewolves for the moon to get you that excited…
“I don’t need to disrespect you, miss, you manage that all on your own,” I said lightly, poking the beast.
Damn, I forgot to dick kick him today.
This girl didn’t deserve to have so many wounds on her heart. She deserved peace and happiness and a life without pain.
There had been something seriously exciting about being with her in there of all places. Like we were mocking the stars for pitting us against each other over who got to sit their ass on it. Of course, they got the last laugh by cursing us though.
"Look east to the heart of the rising star when the wind calls to you and find the origins of your legacy,"
“Two phoenixes, born of fire, rising from the ashes of the past. The wheel of fate is turning and the Dragon is poised to strike. But blood of the deceiver may change the course of destiny. Beware the man with the painted smile who lingers close to your side. Turn the scorned. Free the enslaved. Fear the bonded men. Many will fall for one to ascend. Suffer the curse. The hunter will pay the price. Do not repeat the mistakes of the past. Keep the broken promise. Mend the rift. All that hides in the shadows is not dark. Blood will out. Seal your fate. Choose your destiny.”
"Yeah, everyone knows brooding bad boys are the hardest work when it comes to boyfriends," Seth agreed. "But all the angry fucking usually makes it worth it."
"Are you challenging me to chase you around the palace like we're a bunch of badly behaved kids whose parents can't reel us in?" I asked. "No. I'm challenging you to chase me around the palace like a bloodthirsty Vampire who spends his nights dreaming about the taste of me,"
"No rules, remember?" Seth taunted. My gaze moved up from the constant thrum of his pulse, sliding over the roughness of his jaw and lingering on his mouth for several long seconds before I lifted my gaze to meet his.
Seth's eyes were the richest brown I'd ever seen, like the deepest, warmest tone of chocolate with little flecks of gold buried amongst them and a soul so rich and caring lying within them.
But I liked the way his hands felt on my skin and I liked the way he tasted. Shit, I just liked every fucking thing about him and maybe I was crazy, but I was starting to wonder if-
"By the stars, Cal, you're gonna be the fucking death of me if you don't get to the point soon," he said in a rough voice and I chuckled against his skin, nipping lightly but not puncturing it.
"Don't tease me, Caleb," he murmured. "Not if you don't really..." "Don't really what?" The movement of my mouth on his neck made him growl softly and I felt that noise all the way through my body.
He was still pinning me back against the counter and he ground against me forcefully, the hardness in his pants rubbing against my hip. He tried to move back, but I dropped my hand from his hair and caught his waistband, yanking him close again and holding him there as I felt his arousal driving against me and found I liked that a whole hell of a lot.
My gaze met Seth's and a soft whine slid past his lips before he turned and grinned at Xavier too, but it looked all kinds of false and I couldn’t help but feel like I’d just said the wrong thing. But what was the right thing? ‘Yeah I was just biting him, but it felt like a lot more than that and if you’d interrupted us ten minutes later then I’m not really sure what you would have found.’ That was fucking crazy. Right?
“You’re the best man I know, the best, fucking stupidest, most frustrating man I know. Whether you’re a professor, a convict, a fugitive, a power shamed Fae or all of the above, there isn’t one thing you could be that wouldn’t make me want you. But I just can’t trust you.”
The truth sat on my tongue, weighing it down as heavily as lead. That I’d never be done with him. I loved him too completely. In every minute of every hour, right down to the space between seconds.
This was a terrible idea with a million repercussions that I’d have to face tomorrow. But weren’t all the best ideas that kind?
I’m so fucking sorry, baby.
“I love you, Blue. I loved you then, I love you now, I’ll love you tomorrow even if I’m no longer on this earth. No time exists where I won’t love you.”
"One of my sisters is going to die today. And the only possible chance we have to save them is by me bringing you to the caves of the forgotten." "The what of where?"
She lunged toward me, tiptoeing up and kissing me fiercely for two short, sweet seconds before running around and climbing onto my back. And something told me that might be my last good moment in this world.
Tears slipped down my cheeks and I barely felt the pain of my injuries at all as I gazed at my mate in front of me. A man I had chosen for myself, regardless of stars and fate and laws. He was mine and I was his. Now and always. In the end, he’d kept his promise to me after all and I’d kept mine. We’d fought for each other until we couldn’t fight any more.
“For my most glorious majesties!” she cried. “Peril calls my name and my name is Geraldine Gundellifus Gabolia Gundestria Grus! Hear. Me. Roar!”
“For the true Queens!” Hamish charged through the crowd, pulling his clothes off before shifting into a huge black Cerberus and snapping his jaws at the Fae who’d come to watch us die. There were Tiberian Rats, Minotaurs, Wolves. It was beautiful, terrifying havoc.
But I would show no mercy. It was time for the King and his army to fall. And the Vega Queens to rise.
Fuck, no, I’ve got too much life to live. I never told Cal how I feel.
Lance Orion came for me. He loves me like a pack mate. “This is only because Blue would hate me if I let you die,” he growled and I gave him a Wolf’s grin, my tail pounding against the sand. Sure it is.
But of course he didn’t. He was an Heir. And they’d been bred to be cocky and self-assured until the very end. I just prayed I wouldn’t end up becoming that end.
"The price of knowledge is power. The price of power is great. Every bargain has a cost. What will you trade for a different fate?"
"You wish for love with the girl who denied you. But fate has other designs in mind."
"What would you give for them, Darius Acrux? What would you sacrifice to see them survive?"
She reached up to run her fingers over my cheek, brushing my tears away as my heart broke and I faced a goodbye I’d never gotten the first time I’d lost her. A goodbye I’d never wanted to have to give.
"The life of a Fae means little to the stars. Fate changes, destiny isn't always set in stone. The gift on offer isn't life. It's freedom. A chance. A possibility to change the stars again."
"One year," the voice breathed. "To love her like you ache to. To be the best of yourself. One year and no more."
"A fresh start," the voice confirmed. "Every bond placed upon the two of you by the stars wiped away." "But all I get is a year?"
"A year to live the life you yearn for. A year to find out if you really are the man you wish to be."
The price was too high. But I would pay it twice over for her.
"Blood of the oathbreaker," the voice came again, rich with even more power now as the energy in the cavern made my entire body tingle. "Descendant of the deceiver. Son of the destroyer. Do you offer your life in payment for the breaking of the bonds?"
In the end there was only her for me. I'd inked it onto my skin and it was branded on my heart. She owned me entirely and I was never going to make any other choice.
"I accept your terms," I growled in a deep voice that echoed with finality. "And I offer my life in payment."
