It’s a common ploy even to this day. You’re two sentences into a conversation and they pull out a scripture quote, “God said. . . .” What they’re saying is, your version of truth doesn’t mean anything to us because we have this big trump card called God. The assumption is that they possess God, have God in their pocket, and thus their interpretation of this text or that truth is absolutely correct and there’s no point in continuing.
