The beginning of this book was difficult. I've just lost my wife, and between the feelings Grayson expresses over the loss of his mother and his ruminations on how his wife Haley is now his universe hit me hard. I don't have relations with anyone else in my family, and my wife was my universe. So I almost didn't get through the beginning. But I'm glad I did, because once again Kloos knocks it out of the park with this outstanding piece of military sci-fi that is so compelling and well written. The heroes in this series do not "kick ass and take names" - they're not space Rambos. Instead they are exactly how soldiers would be in any time - they grouse about the suck, they wish they were somewhere else, they miss home and family, and when the time comes they step up and into the breach. And it costs them, physically, mentally, spiritually. But they keep on fighting. This is a great series, and my only disappointment at the end of this book is the fact that we'll have to wait a while for the next one. But waiting I will certainly do!
