Hodgson enlisted into the Royal Artillery where he was soon commissioned a lieutenant. William Hope Hodgson was killed in action by direct impact of an artillery shell at the Fourth Battle of Ypres, while leading a group of NCOs to safety under heavy fire. He was forty years old.
