Writing documentation takes time and effort that could be spent on coding, and the benefits that result from that work are not immediate and are mostly reaped by others. Asymmetrical trade-offs like these are good for the organization as a whole given that many people can benefit from the time investment of a few, but without good incentives, it can be challenging to encourage such behavior.
Could analytics and votes help with this? Knowing that 200 people per month view the page might make us more likely to bother to contribute an update. Or may help us know we had an impact (for self satisfaction and perf).
