Even after 70 years of its publication, 1984 is as relevant and compelling as ever and continues to resonate with readers even today. It is possibly one of the most definitive novels of the 20th century. Having lived through two world wars and having seen the rise of totalitarian regimes on an immense scale, Orwell decided to write this book to warn people about the rise of Stalinism and fascism in the world—a future that many people had dwelled on in the 1930s.
