We begin by assuming the coded symbols we use are of variable length, much like the classical Morse code of dots and dashes, where the common letters are short and the rare ones are long. This produces an efficiency in the code, but it should be noted Morse code is a ternary code, not binary, since there are spaces as well as dots and dashes. If all the code symbols are of the same length we will call it a block code.
