Not all plantation owners supported the institution of slavery because of a sadistic desire to harm blacks; most wanted to get rich, and black slavery was the most efficient means to that end. Every plantation owner, however, was willing to use brutality and violence to force black people into servitude, and every American—whether they lived in the North or South—knew that slavery could not be maintained without terror and the deliberate infliction of pain and suffering.
