These communities desperately need their young men to be holding down jobs and supporting their families, rather than wasting away in prison cells. While there is widespread recognition that the War on Drugs is racist and that politicians have refused to invest in jobs or schools in their communities, parents of people in prison still feel intense shame—shame that their children have turned to crime despite the lack of obvious alternatives.
