You are all asking me to set myself on fire to keep him warm and mad at me for not burning! No!”
“My wife isn’t in the palace. She is here, and I can hardly let her spend her first night here alone, now can I?”
Odette, because of you, I laugh, I smile, and I dare to dream of a future that is worthy of poets. The reasons that brought us together weren’t the best or the most romantic, but I am glad for them nevertheless, and I swear to you, from now until the day I die, your dreams are my dreams. Your joy is my joy. Your pain is my pain, and I will never betray you. You are now my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. You are my sun, my moon, and all of my stars,”

“They will rip me apart, Gale. I am not a queen.”
“They will try, but I will not let them close enough to do so,” he replied, gently lifting my chin back up. “Because you are my queen,”
I will not let you burn to keep me warm, but I will burn everything else so you can stay. So stay.”
“Say you will stay with me?”
“Promise you will stay with me.”
“You have to say it, Odette.” He hugged me tightly. “I’m begging you; please say it.” Every time I wanted him to let go, he held me tighter. “I-I will stay.”
“I want you naked under me. I want to be in you. I want to feel you against me and hear you moan my name. I want...to make love to you until the sun comes up, Odette.”
“Gale!”
“Odette!”
“I missed you more than I wanted to miss you,”
She was so cute.
“Odette, you will be the first black queen in Europe, any comment?”
“You are madly in love with this woman.”
“It is one of the side effects of being in love, and they are drunk on it.”
“And I love you, Odette.”
“I love you, Gale. I love you deeply.”
I was in love with her.
I was right, which is why you are standing in front of me in mismatched socks and a sorry excuse of a twist out, terrified your sister is going to be the queen of a nation while you are just Mrs. Washington.”
“If my mother saw me standing here in this outfit being talked down to by some pitiful, desperate, damaged garbage of a human being like yourself, she would slap me silly. Because she told me a thousand times, there is no line in a ring.”
“He said, ‘I do not know if you are trying to help us or destroy us.’”
I love her, my mind answered. I loved her a lot more than I thought.
“The secret is to lean on your strengths when you can and others when you cannot. Or at least, that has worked for me.”
He was no longer playing the role of the future king. He was being the king.
