You are all asking me to set myself on fire to keep him warm and mad at me for not burning! No!”
Odette, because of you, I laugh, I smile, and I dare to dream of a future that is worthy of poets. The reasons that brought us together weren’t the best or the most romantic, but I am glad for them nevertheless, and I swear to you, from now until the day I die, your dreams are my dreams. Your joy is my joy. Your pain is my pain, and I will never betray you. You are now my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. You are my sun, my moon, and all of my stars,” he repeated, gripping me tighter.
I will not let you burn to keep me warm, but I will burn everything else so you can stay. So stay.”
You are not Cinderella. They need you! You do not need them! If anyone ever tries to make you feel inferior, remind them of that. And if you cannot do it, put me on speakerphone, and I will.”
“And I love you, Odette.”
“I love you, Gale. I love you deeply.”
“All parents do is worry and pray that what we are worrying about doesn’t happen. Even still, I do not like just sitting here and doing nothing.”
“I’ve always trusted my daughter. It is other people I do not trust.”
“Little girl—and I will call you a little girl even as one grows inside of you—if you yell, holler, bark, or anything else that is less than respectful to me again, I swear, pregnant or not, I will smack the taste out of your mouth and on to heaven’s gates. Who do you think you are talking to right now?”
People only saw what they wanted to see.
“I will not be far when you need me,” Gale whispered quickly before putting the correct distance between us.
“And when you love someone, you do not just let them walk away without a fight.”
“Whatever you are struggling through, you shall overcome it.”
We must do as if we know what we must do. No matter what, people will complain and holler or cheer and applaud. We will never be perfect, and we will never please everyone, but we shall press on nevertheless and lead. For that is what we do, and what you must do—press on.”
“And I, you, Odette,” he replied, hugging me tightly. “No matter what lies they write, no matter what anyone says or does, I will be here. Whenever you want to yell or scream or cry, I’ll still be here. We’ll keep taking this step by step and day by day.”
How could I give up? How could I be scared when he was holding on so tightly?
“The secret is to lean on your strengths when you can and others when you cannot. Or at least, that has worked for me.”
“I say to you all today—you will fail at times, and it will feel miserable. Fear will grip you, and you will stumble or freeze. But do not stop, do not give up because, as my mother told me, and I tell you—you will survive it—
Be kind. Be brave. Go forward into whatever awaits you with courage and hope, for you have many more good days ahead of you.
