You are all asking me to set myself on fire to keep him warm and mad at me for not burning! No!”
“My wife isn’t in the palace. She is here, and I can hardly let her spend her first night here alone, now can I?”
Odette, because of you, I laugh, I smile, and I dare to dream of a future that is worthy of poets. The reasons that brought us together weren’t the best or the most romantic, but I am glad for them nevertheless, and I swear to you, from now until the day I die, your dreams are my dreams. Your joy is my joy. Your pain is my pain, and I will never betray you. You are now my body, my mind, my soul, and my heart. You are my sun, my moon, and all of my stars,”
“They will rip me apart, Gale. I am not a queen.” I bit back the tears in my eyes. “They will try, but I will not let them close enough to do so,” he replied, gently lifting my chin back up. “Because you are my queen,”
I will not let you burn to keep me warm, but I will burn everything else so you can stay. So stay.”
“You have to say it, Odette.” He hugged me tightly. “I’m begging you; please say it.” Every time I wanted him to let go, he held me tighter. “I-I will stay.”
I really didn’t like being read like this.
“Do not offer wisdom right now, Odette. I want to complain. Support me in my pity party.”
“Little girl—and I will call you a little girl even as one grows inside of you—if you yell, holler, bark, or anything else that is less than respectful to me again, I swear, pregnant or not, I will smack the taste out of your mouth and on to heaven’s gates. Who do you think you are talking to right now?”
which is why you are standing in front of me in mismatched socks and a sorry excuse of a twist out, terrified your sister is going to be the queen of a nation while you are just Mrs. Washington.”
“The secret is to lean on your strengths when you can and others when you cannot. Or at least, that has worked for me.”
He was no longer playing the role of the future king. He was being the king.
“There are decades where nothing happens, and there are weeks where decades happen.”
“You are a horrible supporting character in my story.” I frowned, staring at my glass. “Is that karma because I was a horrible supporting character in yours too? It’s a bit petty, don’t you think? You’re the older one. You are supposed to outshine me.”
