Thanh is already such a disappointment in Mother’s life: the princess sent away who came back, not brash and confident, but quiet and thoughtful.

Thanh doesn’t know what to say: heart too large in chest, acutely aware of how everything about her feels sad and washed out.

She’s so desperately lonely, in what should be her home.

Afraid. Thanh tastes the word in her mouth, snow and ashes and bitterness.

Silence spreads, heavy and uncomfortable, much like Thanh’s mother not speaking after Thanh has disappointed her one too many times.

Because—because anger is easier, and compassion hurts so much.
