The only reason I get to sit on the throne is because I’ve slaughtered everyone who looks at it, let alone dares to approach it.
Aurora Harper sold her soul to the devil. It goes without saying that she’ll never be able to escape me.
Eleven years ago, I stood over each one and said their names. I apologised for not setting them free sooner and promised to shed everything I had in common with Maxim Griffin. Name, habits — everything down to any type of food we ever shared. That’s why I barely eat anymore.
The fact that I claimed her as mine means something simple — she’s not allowed to disappear. Not even if it’s to face her ghosts.
She can protect herself, and she can do it so well. But that doesn’t stop me from wanting to take all the pain away so no one dares come near her again.
Aurora is mine, and I’ll bring chaos to the world to protect what’s fucking mine.
This is the reality I have to face. The fact that the man I’ve been giving myself to every day is my sister’s killer. What’s stopping him from killing you, too?
Not that he rattles me. No one does. Or more accurately, no one aside from the woman who’s locked in her room because she was trying to escape.
“Don’t cry again.” His voice is hard yet tender at the same time. “Those eyes aren’t made for tears.”
“Fine, let me up.” “So you’ll throw one of your tantrums? No.” “I’m uncomfortable.” “Liar.” His lips twitch. “You’ve been rubbing your thighs together.” “Which means I’m uncomfortable.” “You’re aroused, not uncomfortable. You think I can’t tell the difference?”
I never knew I had a thing for men in suits until Jonathan came along. Or more accurately, he’s the only man in a suit that I have a thing for.
Maybes are too cruel. The fact that those things didn’t happen and never will hurts worse than physical pain.
He hesitates. It’s the first time I’ve witnessed Aiden hesitating. “Jonathan never looked at her the way he looks at you.”
“Aiden is so lucky to have you in his life, Elsa.” “And Jonathan is lucky to have you in his.” I wouldn’t be so sure about that.
“You don’t seem to understand what it means to be mine. It’s not only about how you belong to me, or that I’ll cut off the dick of any bastard who looks your way and shove it up his arse. It’s also about how I’ll protect you from the world and yourself if I have to. It’s about burning your obstacles so you can leave the shadows and shine like you were always meant to. You can provoke or test me or even give me that fucking attitude, but you do not get to run away from me.”
I have a lot of regrets when it comes to Alicia, and there’s no way in fuck I’ll repeat them with Aurora. It doesn’t matter that she’s showing the signs. This time, I won’t leave, even if she pushes me.
I haven’t missed the way she calls my house a home now, either. For someone who never actually belonged anywhere, it’s a huge deal that she’s picking my place as her home.
“Why didn’t you do it with her, then?” Aiden motions his head in Aurora’s direction. “She would throw a tantrum.” Levi chuckles. “Whoa. Has the great Jonathan King finally met his match?” “Looks like it.” Aiden gives me an undecipherable glance.
Soon, she’ll stop fighting or trying to run away from me. Soon, she’ll be safe from both the world and herself. But to make that happen, I might have to take a measure that she won’t like.
His hand grabs both of mine before he lifts them and kisses my knuckles. “You haven’t stopped shaking.” I’m breathless, caught in a trance by the way his lips glide over the back of my hands. He’s not only kissing them, but in his own way, he’s also comforting me. Who knew there would be a day where Jonathan King comforts me?
“Are you telling me women just flirt with you?” “They do. Doesn’t mean I pay them any of my attention.” I peek at him through my lashes. “Not even her?” “No. I don’t mix business with pleasure.” “But you did with me.” “True, though I never considered you business.”
“Your smile, like everything else about you, is mine and mine alone. I don’t share.”
Whether I like to admit it or not, the King mansion has become my home. Jonathan’s home is my home. That’s a scary thought.
“Aurora, look at me.” Her gaze slowly finds mine, and it’s only when she’s fully focused on me that I say, “You did nothing wrong. Do you hear me?” Her lips tremble and she lets her fingers intertwine at the back of my head. “I never thought anyone would ever tell me that.” “I will — every day if I have to — until you believe it.”
She’s mine. Fucking mine. And always will be. I’ll keep owning her until I put a fucking baby inside her. In the past, Aiden was the only offspring I needed, but now, I’m chaining Aurora to me, and if a baby is what it’ll take, then that’s what it will be.
“In case you didn’t notice, you’re intimidating, Jonathan.” He narrows his eyes on me again. “Right.” “I mean it. You have a god-like presence that no one dares to come near.” “You did.” “I would always choose you.” “Always?” “Always.”
“Because the world needs to bend the knee for my queen.” My queen. My mouth falls open and my eyes nearly bug out.
It’s also about how he doesn’t allow me to get lost in the maze in my head. It’s almost as if he knows how dark it gets and pulls me out every time.
I wouldn’t share you for the rest of your life.” “You mean your life?” “Your life. Death won’t stop me, wild one. I’ll find a way, even as a ghost.”
“You don’t have to protect me. Just because I’m a woman doesn’t mean I can’t protect myself.” “I’m not protecting you because you’re a woman. I’m protecting you because you’re my woman.”
Let her go. I know what that means, and despite my black mood, I recognise it’s probably the best option for her. But how the fuck can I let go of the piece of myself I finally found?
While I can’t get enough of him, I’m neither his property nor his toy. I want to be his equal.
He called me his queen once, but what he doesn’t know is that there’s no king to my kingdom but him.
“In case you haven’t figured out the answer, listen carefully, Aurora,” he whispers in dark words against my mouth. “I will not let you go.”
Aurora is a strong, independent woman, and needs her choices. I think part of the reason why she acted up the other time was because I completely took that will away. It’s hard to give a choice when I’m used to my orders being met, but for her, I will learn. Eventually.
There’s no mutual fucking understanding with Aurora. She does what her head tells her and tests my control every step of the way. Yet she’s the only woman who’s fit to be the queen of my empire.
