One recent survey estimates the cost of engagement in Iraq and Afghanistan as being as high as $6 trillion—or $75,000 for every American household once long-term medical care and disability compensation is taken into account. This represents around 20 per cent of the rise in U.S. national debt between 2001 and 2012.72
