Every mortal has the same shade—well, every human and the Lavenders, who are shunned creatures with the misfortune of being both vampire and human—but
Once a vampire reaches maturity, which always happens in the days surrounding our twenty-third birthdays, our eyes change color.
The most common upon maturing is scarlet. These vampires are known for their fertility and beauty. They are sent to Kin, the most glittering of our districts, where they inevitably secure excellent marriages among the socialites of our kind. Those with titian eyes enter the entertainment section, Las Prinix, where there’s a constant stream of music, acting, and dancing. There are even a handful of studios that produce shows and movies for streaming across the continent. The cerulean-eyed ones dedicate their eternities to science and mathematics in Lancaster. Several of the world’s most

I’m disappointed, but not surprised.
Lavenders are the scourge of our society. Abominations, Father has called them on more than one occasion. Half-human, half-vampire, they are rejected by both species and belong nowhere.
The Vampire King’s eyes are, fittingly, golden. The mark of a true leader. Decades ago, due to the Weeping Virus, humans became an endangered species. Someone needed to step forward. Someone needed to establish order and control. That’s when the Six rose to power. Five other vampires that were alive during the dark ages… and Alexander Travesty.
The wall. It encircles the entirety of New Ve, and in certain parts, where income is low and crime more rampant, its surface is adorned with corpses. Slaves who displeased their masters, criminals who were put to death, and the Lavenders. It’s not even considered an offense to kill one.
I don’t recognize any of the businesses or street names, which means we must be in Wardthorpe. Long ago, Father forbade everyone in the mansion from coming here. It’s the biggest district in the city, a place for vampires who defy the king’s color-coded system and free humans. Their freedom comes at a steep price, though. The vampires exist without the protection of guards or the royal purse strings. The unclaimed humans may be fed upon or outright killed. They, too, are forced to find other ways to pay their bills. Alexei drives us out of Wardthorpe and into more familiar territory. The

Decades ago, before New Ve was formed, a virus swept the world. Humans and vampires alike can contract it, and the result is similar to rabies, except these victims don’t die. They roam, mindless and endlessly hungry. We call them weepers—amongst their many other gruesome symptoms, victims of the virus are constantly sobbing, crying, and wailing.
While it’s common knowledge that my kind isn’t exactly liked around here, Wardthorpe, or Midtown, I suspect the city has already learned of my disastrous Awakening.
Oh, god, does this mean I’ll have the lifespan of a human?
“This is Hideshi Takahashi.” Moving so quickly that even I don’t catch it, Hideshi pulls out a piece of unbreakable plastic that serves as his identification. My eyes scan over it quickly. He’s a city employee and a kitsune.
The tattoo is put in two places—around the right wrist and on the left side of the neck—and at least one of them needs to be showing at all times. The wrist tattoo is a black band and the neck is the wearer’s citizen number. Tattoos are particularly painful for vampires. Not only because of our sensitive skin, but also because the needles have to go deeper for us, in order to be permanent.
“Don’t apologize for being strong. My manhood isn’t insulted or anything,” Drew says with a wink.
Before I can stop him, my hair falls around my shoulders in limp waves. I roll my eyes, but the effect is ruined by the tiny smile curving my lips.
