Daisy was right: this whole situation was so not me.
“Kieran is a Demigod. Custom should be all I see. If you don’t have the top designers’ info, I can forward it to you. I’m friendly with most of them. If she shows well at the Summit, I’ll have them all.” It sounded like she was collecting trading cards. She gave Aubri a frosty stare. “I shouldn’t need to be telling you this.” Daisy was only newly fifteen, but lately she sounded thirty. If surviving were an art, my younger ward would be van Gogh, except the lost ear would belong to her enemy.
“Alexis has the natural gift of being the most striking person in the room, regardless of what she wears or how she acts,” Jerry said. “Like her father.”
Chaos, the male cat, with his luminous green eyes, rubbed against my leg in greeting. I staggered to the side. He hadn’t yet figured out his own strength. Havoc, the female, purred softly, sitting in the middle of the entryway so I’d have no choice but to greet her or go around. She slowly blinked her bronze eyes, burning brightly with intelligence.
‘Oh, I’m Demigod Kieran the Magnificent, everything will be fine, I’ve got everything covered, want to shake hands with my colossal ego?’” “Everything will be fine,” he said, a smile wrestling with his lips, “everything is covered, thanks for the new nickname, and don’t bother getting up—my ego can reach you from here.”
Watch out, magical world. Here comes the pajama-wearing Soul Stealer with her overgrown white cats.
The dichotomy was electrifying. Daisy had her own hidden talents.
“Demigod Kieran is my boyfriend and the holder of my mark, not my keeper, and you, sir, are a cowardly little bitch who needs his balls cut off.”
He is not a nice man. Do not be fooled by his civility. He’s a kid killer!
The joy of mocking Jerry was still going strong, made hilarious when occasionally Jerry decided to volley an insult back.
“That was beyond a successful start to the Summit.” Amber sat at the small, round kitchen table in the corner and pushed open her laptop. “We have something for everyone. We have a brand-new Demigod that stole a territory from his extremely capable father, a legendary magic as feared as it is coveted, a Lightning Bolt back from the dead, a giant who must now have a reputation for the longest enduring scowl during an outing”—the guys burst out laughing—“the first Chester to ever walk the promenade, a YouTube star Berserker, and a few other people no one noticed.” She leaned back and rubbed her

“Anyone who is blessed enough to know love will never be poor.” She tilted her head to the side. “The happiest years of my life were with you. None of it mattered. I never looked back. We had a fine life, you and I. It fulfilled me in every way. Now, it is time for you to save the day. Go with the flow, just like I taught you, and seize your opportunity to shine. I have faith in you, my heart, and I love you.”
“Here’s what the hell is going on. We are related.” He grinned at me. “I am”—he pointed at Magnus—“that guy’s dad, many, many moons ago. His mother was very pretty. I couldn’t resist.” He gestured between us. “Makes our interactions a little gross by your standards, I grant you, but just remember that by my standards”—he shrugged—“it’s just another day.” “Wait…” My mind went blank, the enormity of what he was saying starting to sink in. “You’re not… You can’t be…” “Yeah.” He spread his arms wide. “I’m Hades.”
“Don’t say you’re sorry. Most magical people would give their left tit to have been in my place, even if they had to die for it. We were trained for battle, and that’s exactly what you gave us. I felt alive when guarding you. Thank you. And now, look”—she hooked a thumb at Hades—“I have an in. Can’t beat that.”
Apparently I had a type, and that type was of the sea.
“You will squabble over Alexis Price no longer. From now on, with my power and my blessing, she is Demigod Alexis. Have a care with her—she does not like being bullied.”
She continued to stare at nothing, and he couldn’t help chuckling. None of their team said one peep, not even Daisy. He took a deep breath and pulled her into his arms.
Now that Alexis had the power to get herself out of a jam if Kieran ever went crazy, Daisy felt comfortable enough to let down her guard and say that he was one helluva guy.
