Product manager James Mayes has proposed a product ethics test for people who design and build these services. In the test he asks: would you be willing to stand on a stage in front of your users and explain how your product guides their behavior and makes suggestions? So far no one has volunteered to take it.
The challenge we face is this: how far into the future are we designing for? Are we willing to think through design collisions? Unintended consequences? Can we balance our individual desires with contributing to society and the longevity of the human experiment on planet earth?
