“You’re something else, Poppy. You know that?” My blush grew so furious I thought I might actually catch fire at any second. “I’m just me,” I said quietly, looking up at him through the fan of my lashes. “Nothing special.”
A deep rumble drew my attention back across the table, and when I looked at Jase, I could see his chest shaking as he chuckled quietly. “You know, you’re cute as hell when you’re all flustered.” I refilled the glass and held it aloft in silent cheers. “Well, if that’s what you think, you’re in for a real treat, buddy.”
“So you’re telling me I don’t make you nervous?” I asked, lowering my voice as the inches between us disappeared. That pretty pink blush started spreading across her cheeks as she stuttered, “N-no. I-I’m not nervous.” Oh hell, this is gonna be fun.
“I would never make fun of you, Flower,” he stated. “There’s not much you do that I don’t find cute.”
We weren’t even married, and already I was having insanely inappropriate thoughts about my fake husband-to-be.
His chest rumbled with humor. “A man and the woods?” “Yup. Mm hmm.” I nodded against the soft cotton of his shirt. “A man and the woods. Like a sexy lumberjack . . . in a suit.” “Christ, Flower, you’re incredible, you know that? Crazy beautiful and absolutely perfect.” I felt the softness of the mattress and let out a happy sigh. “Jase Hyland,” I mumbled as I slipped further and further out of consciousness. “You’re my favorite person ever.”
I knew at that very moment, without a shadow of a doubt, I’d fallen completely and totally in love with the woman standing before me. For the first time in my life, I loved someone other than Bennett and Farah. It was an all-consuming, stomach-plunging, free fall into the unknown without a safety harness.
“Poppy Hyland, you’re my favorite person ever,” I said, speaking those words she’d said to me weeks ago in the midst of sleep. Her eyes flared, and I knew she remembered saying that when her lips spread into the most beautiful smile. “You’re my favorite person ever too. Now go get ready. I’m in the mood to see you in a tux.”
“That woman is my world, Ben,” Jase spat, his expression twisted with so much pain it hurt to look at him. “She’s my everything. She’s my goddamn reason for breathing, Bennett. There’s no other option here. I have to get her back, you understand? Because I don’t fucking exist without her.”
“I love you too, Poppy. More than you can imagine. So you don’t let go. You hear me? Don’t you dare let go.”
I need to tell you I love you, that I’ve loved you from the first moment I saw you, but I didn’t realize just how strong it was until you told me I was your favorite person. I need to tell you I’ve never been anyone’s favorite person until you, and how that is the biggest honor of my life. I need to tell you I’ll spend every day breaking my back to make sure I always remain your favorite person.
