“It was our Order,” Roxy said grimly. “Apparently our fire can burn right through bullshit.”
Phoenixes were practically a myth. No one was even sure they really had existed. They were supposed to have been the most powerful Order of all, their flames capable of all kinds of insane things. Some people even claimed they’d been immortal but if that was the case then where were they? How did a species die off if they couldn’t die?
“Because if the things I’ve read about Phoenixes are true - even half true - then the two of you could be more powerful than any Fae who has walked the earth in the last millennia. You’re like the Fae of old, legendary… I don’t even know what your limits would be,
I felt like we were on a merry go round that wouldn’t stop turning. We kept coming back to this point and maybe I should have accepted it. Because I couldn’t keep trying with her and having it thrown back in my face. So if she wanted us to hate each other then I’d have to play my part in it. Because I couldn’t keep away from her, that much was becoming abundantly clear. So I’d just have to keep being her villain.

Because now I’d had a taste of Grus, I wasn’t going back. That girl was going to be mine.
“Phoenixes are endowed with the capacity to exhibit high levels of resilience pertaining to the Divisus Orders and the subliminal Cardinal Magics.”
“It means, you’re easily able to fight off psychological magic. Like Coercion.”
“So what you’re saying is, our power is endless?” Tory asked, grinning in a way that was only going to piss Darius off. “As in, so long as I can cast fire, I’ll never run out of magic. Unlike big fat lizard shifters who have to pop off for a snooze on a heap of gold whenever they’re running low?”
“Phoenix fire is born of the sun itself. It’s capable of destroying all matter and is able to sever many magical spells. In both Order and Fae form, Phoenixes are impervious to all types of fire, including that produced Elementally or through other Order forms. It is also capable of harming Orders which are resistant to fire like Manticores, Hydras and…Dragons.”
“That wasn’t that hard, was it? You don’t want me long term, so why would I commit to you short term? We have fun Caleb but I’m not your girl. If you can’t handle the idea of me meeting other people, maybe even hooking up with them, then we can just call time on this thing between us. Because I’m not ever going to put my life on hold for a man. Especially one who doesn’t think I’m good enough to make the cut long term.”

“What’s it like?” I asked curiously. “Finding your one true love?” Gabriel’s gaze softened as he thought about the woman who owned his heart, and he smiled as he answered. “Like, getting hit with a truck and having it back over you several times while you lay bleeding in the dirt.” “What?” Darcy laughed. “Yeah. I didn’t think I’d ever seen a girl I desired as much as her and I couldn’t stop myself from drinking in the sight of her even while she stood insulting me right to my face.

“I think the stars picked you for me, Blue. I think you’re my Elysian Mate.”
“So what?” I snapped. “So I won’t let you ignore me, Roxy,” he snarled. “I’ll have your attention even if I have to take it without your permission.” “Why?” I demanded. “Why not just go after someone else?” “Because we don’t get to choose our obsessions. And you’re mine.”
“I think it’s time for us to accept who we are. We’re the lost Vega Princesses, Heirs to our own throne and the most powerful assholes in the whole of Solaria. And I think it’s time we stop letting other people tell us what that means and start deciding it for ourselves.”
His muscles bulged from the workout, the Phoenix and Dragon tattoos which danced with each other on his back gleaming with sweat.

“Good. Because I’m not a better man,” he said in a low growl, his eyes full of shadows. “I’m the devil and I want you. I want you like I’ve never wanted anything or anyone. And I will fight to make you mine, no matter what it takes. No force in Solaria will rip us apart.” I stared at him in awe of his words, lost to the power of them. I clutched his hand and nodded firmly. “I’ll fight for you too, Lance Orion. Whatever it takes.” “Whatever it takes,” he echoed, and a clap of power sparked between our hands. Darius Acrux was probably the most pig headed, arrogant, infuriating man I’d ever met. But he was fucking mind blowing in the sack.

“Well, can you do me a favour?” he asked just as he pressed healing magic beneath my skin to remove the bite Caleb had given me. “What?” I asked cautiously. “The next time you want to drown in them, tell me about it.” “Why?” “Because if you’re going to drown then I’m going to drown with you.” He released me and walked from me before I gave him an answer and I frowned at his back as he strode away. I didn’t know what the hell I was supposed to make of that declaration. Did he crave the kiss of the shadows too? Or was he really just offering to hold my hand if I fell?
He held up the flower, twirling it between his fingers with a smirk and handed it over. I took it, heat invading my cheeks. “It’s beautiful.” “It’s average. You on the other hand…” He pulled me in again, plucking the flower from my grip and tossing it down on my desk. “Look absolutely kidnappable.”

“Sorry today was a disaster.” “It wasn’t,” I said honestly, drawing him closer by tugging on his shirt. “I loved it.” “I love you,” he countered, and the world paused as the weight of his words slowed time itself. “Lance,” I inhaled, a feeling of raw happiness threading itself into my heart. “This isn’t the way I was going to say it and I’m still not sure that I should have…” His brows pulled together. “I don’t know how long we have, Blue, but my heart will be yours whether we’re together or not.”

I hadn’t been with anybody since that mental break I’d had at the Shimmering Springs with Darius. That absolutely unforgettable, I-might-just-dream-about-it-every-night-for-the-rest-of-my-life slip in sanity that I liked to pretend hadn’t happened.

I didn’t know whether to think my parents had just had way too much money or if they’d been partial to an orgy or two.

We’d never asked for this destiny, never wanted this power or a throne or to be pitted against the Heirs. But it was ours all the same. We’d been born to rule over this kingdom and the strength of our father and love of our mother ran through our veins. We were the most powerful Order of Fae that had been seen in a thousand years. We were the first Fae to possess all four Elements in living memory. So maybe it was time we stopped denying our birthright. Because the Vegas had been born to rule. And I was sick of being forced to bow.

“I’ll never bow to you,” I breathed as the cold stone at the foot of the throne bit into my skin. “But if you like me on my knees then there are better things that I can do down here than kiss your feet.”
“I don’t want you on your knees. I want you fighting me and hating me and fucking me like you mean it. You’re Roxanya Vega and you weren’t built to bow to anyone,” he growled passionately.
He was like a drug, and I felt like an addict going back for another hit. I knew that he was poison, but I just couldn’t stop myself from taking a bite.
His arms wrapped around me, and he drew me into a kiss unlike the others we’d shared. His tongue pushed into my mouth almost slowly and his hands slid up my spine as I gave in and it didn’t just feel like lust anymore. It felt like the sky was falling in and the earth was splitting apart and the only two things left in the world were the two of us.

“You can deny it as much as you like, Roxy, but you and me are going to happen over and over,” he promised, the scent of him wrapping around me and the heat of his flesh blazing so fiercely I could feel it despite the inch of space dividing us. “So no matter how much you hate me or despise me or wish you didn’t want me in any way at all, there’s no stopping it. You don’t feel fire like that and just let it burn out.”
This was a Divine Moment. The stars had guided me here and they’d be bringing someone else to join me. Someone who was perfect for me in every way. Who pushed me and challenged me.
