She could handle his assumptions about her. No one saw the person under the Hollywood polish. And who was she to disappoint him? If he wanted a spoiled rich bitch to shadow, she’d give him one.
“You look fucking beautiful in the dress, but you’d look that way in a dress that I can’t see through. I am begging you, Angel, for the love of God, do not wear this dress tonight. I need to be on alert for threats, not watching to make sure your spectacular tits don’t fall out of your dress.”
“God damn it.” His voice was jagged. “I can’t decide if I want to kiss you or choke you.”
“I’m co-dependent. Daughter of an alcoholic,” she shrugged. “I’m responsible for causing and healing all pain and discomfort.”
His momentum carried him into the kitchen and then he was reaching for her. He pulled her into his arms and his mouth found hers in a fierce, possessive kiss. He wanted to brand her, to claim her so no one else could touch her.
“Uh, yeah. Are we not going to talk about that kiss? Was that the first one? Was it the last one? Oh my God, are you guys going to get married and make babies so beautiful that mere mortals can’t look directly at them? Can I start calling you Xaverly?” “Shut up, Kate,” Waverly and Xavier said in unison.
“I’m not yelling,” he yelled. “I’m being upset on your behalf in a loud manner.”
“I’m not saying use her as bait. I’m saying we can’t keep her on lock down here in town. The international leg of the publicity tour starts in eight days. What do we do with her until then?” “Does ‘her’ get a say in any of this?” Waverly grumbled. “Of course, her do,” Kate shot back. “No, her don’t,” Xavier shot back from the kitchen.
“Never house your office higher than the ladders of fire trucks can reach,” Xavier lectured her.
“Son, sometimes our women don’t want to be protected. They want to be supported when they go out and kick ass on their own.”
“I love you, my Angel,” he murmured against her ear. “Since the moment you tossed me in that pool, I’ve been in love with you, and I’m not going to stop. So you need to stay with me.”
When had Waverly Sinner turned into a woman who could be destroyed by the capriciousness of a man?
It was time for a new life. One that she chose for herself. One where she would never again allow herself to be blinded by love.
