She is supposed to be some genius inventor, right? She
“I’m glad you’re here, ” he said. But just as Nova’s heart began to flutter, he added, “I’m glad you’re on my side.” She allowed a wisp of a smile in return. “What other side would I be on?”
“Operation Crown Jewels.” Nova and Adrian gawked at him, speechless for a moment, before Adrian cleared his throat. “Uh . . . what?” “You know. Crown jewels . . . rubies . . . get it?” Nova’s eyes narrowed skeptically. “Isn’t that a euphemism for . . .”
Here’s what I’ve got so far.” He cleared his throat. “Rubies are red, your eyes are blue . . .” “Stop, ” said Nova. Oscar froze. “What?” “Her eyes are hazel, ” she said.
But it wasn’t exactly a fair fight, was it? Because somehow, she had Agent N. She had your weapon.”
“Are these . . . ?” “Lemon-coconut-shortbread cookies with white chocolate centers, ” Oscar said, his ears turning pink. “Yes. Yes, they are.” Ruby gawked at him. “That’s . . . my mom makes . . . these are my favorite!” “Yeah, I know.” Oscar cleared his throat awkwardly and held the tin toward Nova. “I, uh, called your mom for the recipe.”

“All right, then, ” said Honey, dragging a pointed nail down the back of a plump bumblebee that was crawling along her pinky finger. “Shall I have the honors?” Leroy yawned. “I’ll warm up the car. Do you think it’s best to drop the body into the bay or the river?” “The river is closer, ” said Honey. “And I don’t really think anyone’s going to miss her, despite this talk of Rejects.” Her smile became wicked. “I’ll call the bluff.”
“Great marvels, ” muttered Leroy. “She’s decent at faking courage, at least.”
can wait, Danna. You need to eat and rest and—” “It can’t wait.”
“She kissed me, ” he interrupted. “She made me think that I . . .” He trailed off, just short of confessing the brutal words that had been clinging to him since the moment he’d found out the truth. I could be in love with her.
Adrian really had taken it from her, the last connection she had to her father.
She had been alone then, and she had known it. No family. No one to take care of her. No one to help her be brave. No one to help her through this. Until Ace had come and she had remembered—no, she wasn’t alone. She still had family. She still had Uncle Ace, and it was all she had, and she had grasped on to that small piece of comfort as tightly as her trembling little fists could.
“None of you have the authority to question the Council’s decisions in such a disrespectful manner.” Adrian gulped, unable to recall ever seeing Tamaya Rae so livid. And all because a group of Renegades had dared question the Council? Surely they were allowed to do that, right?
“We accept.” “No, ” Adrian whispered, shaking his head. Ruby’s hand squeezed tighter around his arm. “They can’t let her . . .”
