Hawke’s gaze remained fastened on mine as he stepped forward. “Both halves are as beautiful as the whole.”
“With my sword and with my life, I vow to keep you safe, Penellaphe,” he spoke, voice deep and smooth, reminding me of rich, decadent chocolate. “From this moment until the last moment, I am yours.”
“No insincere thanks are required or needed. It is my duty to keep you safe.” He paused. “Even from treacherous staircases.”
“Watch your step. You trip and fall here, you’re likely to take me out on your way down.” I huffed. “I won’t trip.” “But you just did.” “That was a rarity.” “Well, then, I feel honored that I bore witness to it.”

“Just like I told you I would. I came back for you, and you weren’t there,” he continued. “You promised me, Princess.”
