“His mom is sick,” Taylor said, biting her lip to contain the smile turning up the corners of her mouth.

Samiah whirled on him. “Read the room, Craig. Read the fucking room,” she snarled, unable to pull off the blasé pretense a second longer.

“My ten-year reunion was a nightmare,” Samiah said.

Mine was so fun

Happiness had not been part of the equation when she’d made her plans. The concept was too vague for her to fully grasp it. She felt safer, more in control, when dealing in absolutes. True happiness—whatever that meant—would follow once she finally achieved these concrete items she’d set out to attain.

“Oh, wow,” Denise said as she took in the sight before her. “I didn’t think I’d find all three of you here.”

She despised cattiness among women in the workplace. Things were rough enough for their gender, especially in the male-dominated tech world.

She authored her own narrative. No one else had the power to write it for her. It was time she take back control of her life story. If she was going to be known for something, let it be a kick-ass idea that helped to create some good in the world.

And if she tried to defend herself, they’d ask why she was so angry. It was the same shit over and over again.

Chronicles of a black woman

Leaning forward, Samiah wrapped her fingers around the back of his neck and brought him in close. The moment their lips touched, her expectations were confirmed.

I know thats right!

“I wanted to apologize,” he said. He waited for her to speak. She didn’t. The atmosphere in the office grew a thousand times more uncomfortable.

“Thank you.” She looked at her reflection in the now blank monitor and smoothed a hand over her flawless hair. “I always do.”

She is exactly who she think she is

“That’s my question,” Samiah said. “You’re the one who came up with this idea to dedicate six months to working toward our goals. As I recall, teaching phys ed to a bunch of kids wasn’t on that list.”

Taylor reached over to slap her palm, but then pulled back. “Wait! You’re a rich doctor, what do you know about bills?”

Was he mistaken in thinking that a woman would want to introduce her new boyfriend to her friends?

Boyfriend?? Huh?

“No,” London said. Samiah burst out laughing as she took London by the arm. “Remember, this is just a test run. She’s going to take it easy on us.”

“We have a proposal for you,” Barrington started. “How would you like to head up your own department?”

She better say yes!

“When it goes to market,” he corrected. “And I understand where you’re coming from.” He pressed a kiss to the indentation between her neck and collarbone. “But it’s not as if I’m asking for co-developer status or anything, Samiah. I’m just saying that if you need some extra hands, I’m here.”

Your time is coming, Taylor Powell. You just make sure you’re ready to make the most of it when it does.”

“But then I listened to what he had to say,” London continued. “And, well, I’m out here in the wilderness putting damn sticky notes on trees and shit. That should tell you something.”
