The first airmail service in the world, demonstrated in 1911, is engraved in the name of India.
Seven existing airlines—Deccan Airways, Bharat Airways, Kalinga Airlines, Himalayan Aviation, Airways-India, Indian National Airways and Air Services of India—were merged with Indian Airlines, while Air India Ltd. (Tata Airlines had become a public limited company on 29 July 1946, and was renamed as Air India Ltd.) became a public corporation and the national carrier.
