Everything in this world revolves around sex. Wars have started… Empires collapsed… Friends and family walk around with knives firmly lodged in backs… If it’s really all about a second-long dick sneeze, then I’m just ashamed about the human race in general.

Even the most groundbreaking events of our lives were nothing more than blips on the radar. No matter how hard things seemed while we were living them, we would move past them and find better times. We all carried scars. We just had to learn not to limp.

When you boil life down to its essence, what matters most is who and how you love.

We all put up fronts, these pleasant façades that we wear for different people. We have one for strangers, one for acquaintances, one for people we want to impress. How are we ever supposed to know if we’re dealing with the façade, or if we’ve finally met the real person? What if the façade never drops? Are we always walking around, being someone less than true to ourselves in order to be what we think other people want?

Or worse, what happens when that façade doesn’t drop until you’re so deeply involved in a relationship that you can’t remember what life was like without it? The mask drops and you realize the person you thought you knew doesn’t exist. Instead, you’re tangled up with this funhouse mirror version of someone you’ve dedicated your life to.

“Being lost doesn’t count,” I joked. Lucas studied me, the levity slipping from his face. “We’re all lost, babe. All of us. If anyone tries to make you believe he knows what he’s doing, he’s full of shit. Every day is nothing more than trying to find your way forward. The trick is figuring out how to turn the confusion into a good time, otherwise life is going to suck.”

It’s the stories we have to tell that makes life worth living.
