I could make out the shapes of the officers on the ground. I even heard groaning. I’m sure some of them were still alive.”
Beth
Four heads shots. None of them were still alive.

“This building predates times when rooftop lounges and bars were popular, and the shape of the roof prohibits access. The highest floor is the twenty-sixth, and that’s used for service-related issues.
Beth
How could he believe there isn’t any access to the roof? Just because it doesn’t have customer use/access doesn’t mean there’s no access. There would have to access to deal with maintenance issues.

“That much, I can help you with. The manager is Ted Laurantis. I don’t have his phone number, but I’ve heard he lives in Streeterville.”
Beth
Why wouldn’t they have gotten the hotel general manager there by now? He’d have access to everything. This is just dumb.

“So how’s the family?” I asked. “Isn’t your wife pregnant with, what, your third kid?” He rolled his eyes. “She’s seven months along with the fourth, and I swear this is the last one. I’m cutting her off. She has a baby obsession that my wallet can’t afford. At least the others are in school.”

“Well, as much as I bitch about it, I wouldn’t want my life to be any other way. Sure, our house is modest, but it’s home. I love Laurie, and my kids are the best.”
Beth
I feel like this and the section above are setting us up for him to be the next victim.

“I’m Detective McCord”—I pointed my thumb over my shoulder—“and this is Sanders. Are you the owner of this fine establishment?”
Beth
Detective Sanders is more likely to be how McCord introduces him.

“It does help, and I’m getting a lot closer to finding closure. I’m sure I’ll be able to get a full night’s sleep before long.”
Beth
Either Terry is our man or this is a cleverly worded red herring.

Terry Lasko’s case instantly came to mind simply because it was so recent. His wife had been shot during a home invasion, killing her and their unborn daughter. It had happened a month to the day before the first police shooting, but there was no way mild-mannered Terry was responsible.

He had mentioned that he was an actuary the first time I’d sat down with him over a beer, but I had no idea if he worked for a company or if he was self-employed and worked from home.

I couldn’t keep it to myself, and I’d never get over it if more innocent lives were taken when I could have prevented that.

“Yeah, I don’t know. I’ve never been a fan of guns, especially lately.” “Jeez, man, I didn’t mean to be insensitive. Guess it’s second nature to me to work on my shooting skills, plus it’s just fun to get out and pop off a few rounds. Do you even have a gun?” “Nope. Never thought I’d have a need for one. I think I’ll pass on the offer, but last night was a good time.
Beth
First, if he’s a killer why don’t you think he’d be a liar? Secondly, this doesn’t seem suspicious, calling him the morning after you just saw him when you hadn’t been able to get together easily recently?

The electric wouldn’t be on in a vacated foreclosure would it?

“I think we should consider Terry a person of interest and check into his background. He had no reason to lie about owning a gun unless he didn’t want us to know about it.” Silence filled the phone line for a few seconds before Ron responded. “Lying doesn’t make him a killer. If we don’t have evidence of some sort that he’s involved, the DA will never allow an arrest, and at this point, we have zilch.”
Beth
You’re cops. You can check into his background without getting an arrest warrant or bringing him in for questioning.

wondered what was going on since Laurie didn’t answer either phone. Maybe their service got disconnected.
Beth
Really? Why would he think that?

“Jesse? It seems that I’m on your mind a lot these last few days. What’s that about?”
Beth
Yeah like that doesn’t throw up a red flag on both sides.

It can’t be too dangerous of a task to enter an empty house, and you’ve already been inside and know the layout. You wouldn’t even have to ram the door.”
Beth
They already know he snuck out once. Why wouldn’t it occur to them he could have snuck back in. His phone is turned off so they don’t know where he is and they know he isn’t driving his car. Common sense says you’d watch the back of the house too.

With the “all clear” confirmation that Terry Lasko had never returned to his home, Morish and I headed out. We’d be tearing apart Terry’s house in less than fifteen minutes.
Beth
Sloppy and stupid.
