“We finish this now, Nicholina. Get. The. Hell. Out. Of. My. Wife.”
“Do you have something in your pocket, Chass, or are you just happy to see me?” I couldn’t help it. I threw back my own head and laughed.
“I love you, Reid. I don’t say it often enough.” I blinked at her. Warmth cracked open in my chest at her words, spreading to the tips of my fingers and toes. “I love you too, Lou. I’ve always loved you.”
“I’ll find you again, Lou,” I whispered, and her brows puckered in confusion. I kissed them smooth. “I promise.” Before she could answer, I clenched my fist in her hair. The pattern burst in a shower of gold. I saw no more.
“You’re . . . you are very pretty, Lou.” “The prettiest you’ve ever seen?” I nearly wept in frustration. “Prettier, even. I can’t think when I look at you.”
“What do I smell like, Reid?” His head fell upon my shoulder. “Like a dream.”
Do you want to worship my body like you used to?” I couldn’t move. “I can show you how if you’ve forgotten,” she breathed. “I remember how to worship you.”
“Why don’t I remember you?” I demanded. Those beautiful eyes blinked. “You chose to forget.” “Why?” “Because you loved me.” Because you loved me.
“You make me feel right. Whole.”
My wife. I couldn’t remember. Those memories had disappeared, leaving great cracks of emptiness in my identity. In my mind. In my heart. No, I couldn’t remember. But now I wanted to.
“Please, don’t cry. I can’t stand your tears. They make me—they make me want to rend the world apart to stop them, and I can’t—” He kissed me again, fierce with abandon. “Tell me again. Tell me all of it. I’ll remember this time.”
“I love you,” she breathed, lashes fluttering as I brushed soft kisses along her cheeks. Her nose. Her eyelids. “I loved you then, I love you now, and I’ll love you after.”
A witch and a witch hunter can’t have each other in the afterlife.” I lifted my head then. “I’ll find you again, Lou.”
“You found me,” I whispered. “I promised.”
