It was the flashing eyes that got me. She hadn’t been afraid, she’d been fierce. Fierce women fascinated me. This fierce woman dared me to discover who she was.
“Kind of like us,” Sparky grinned. “Except you’re Nebula, only not as mean, and I’m like Rocket, but less hairy, if Rocket looked like Star-Lord.”
I was smitten. More than smitten, actually. Probably something closer to besotted, with a side of lustful thoughts for added intrigue.
“I take my coffee black, and I wanted something sweet. The options were tea and hot chocolate, and the fake marshmallows in the packaged shit taste like freeze-dried ass pellets, so tea it is.”
Fear pissed me off in principle, and I refused to allow it any control over my actions.
The fact that I was wildly attracted to this very random Englishman I knew almost nothing about was the most disconcerting thing of all.
“When you wear black clothes and someone asks whose funeral it is, look around the room and tell them you haven’t decided yet.”

He smirked. “They see a skinny brown boy and they have no clue who’s coming for them.”
“Payback and Karma are the bitchy little sisters of Revenge, and I promise you, it’s not a family you want to mess with.”
We both agreed that it would be far more interesting if more of history was written by someone other than the victorious white guys.
“I actually have two legs. One just likes to dress up as a steampunk Goth.” I honestly couldn’t help the snark, and I heard a snicker behind me.
“You could never be normal. Extraordinary is not normal. Stunning is not normal. Brilliant is. Not. Normal.”
My grandson likes to climb into laps when he’s done eating, and I’m fairly certain his spirit animal is an octopus.”
“You can be afraid and still strong, still fearless and indomitable. You can be afraid, and you can trust, and then when you’re ready, you can let go of the fear. Fear muffles you. Let it go, and then you can live out loud again like you’re meant to.”
Her words slipped into the quiet spaces in my brain and found homes there.
“As a black man, I hope one day I have as many rights as a gun.”
“I have to ask; why the pink shoes?” I looked down at the large, hot pink, injected-foam clog-type slippers he wore. If there were more horrible shoes in the world, I hadn’t seen them.
“Whatever words get said in the heat of anger, or cold fear, or even calm conversation, it is your choice to believe them, and your choice to give them meaning. Because you know what? They are just words, and the only power words have over us is the power we give them.”
Sparky’s mouth quirked in a half-smile. “I wear hot pink Crocs and I cry at happy endings. I’m not afraid to admit when guys are hunky.”
“If by jerk you mean I love you enough to call you on your crap, then yeah, I’ll own that.”
Be Gamora, Shane. Take the risk.”
