You are also a great proponent of universal, unconditional love. This more transcendent view of love is sometimes difficult for partners to understand because it’s more of a spiritual than physical love. In fact, the incidental matters of romantic love don’t necessarily concern people with the 25-51. You don’t mean to come across as cool, though those who entertain the drama and movie like notions of romantic love might misinterpret you as such; you just believe that the spread of unconditional love is the only way for the world to grow.
You also entertain a sneaking suspicion that everyone else is asleep and you’re wide awake!
You believe that what you bring to the world can make a difference. You can be the architect who improves a building’s design, the salesperson whose product changes the world, or the charmer whose mere presence will rock someone’s world. You are a creative being, master manipulator, and charming messenger rolled into one, driven by willpower, seeking to be the best.
27 Channel of Preservation 50
You are a natural caregiver and caretaker, born with a sense of duty to protect and serve. Don’t be surprised to find a lot of service people, health givers, nannies, hospital administrators, executive secretaries, and massage therapists with the 27-50 quality. You are always engaged in caring for members of a community by promoting or providing nurturing and the preservation of a way of life.
It’s as if you’ve entered into a social contract with yourself to put your needs secondary to those of everyone else. Friends and family will no doubt observe how you’re always mothering someone or forever wanting to look after people. But you derive great satisfaction when your duty and care nourish or protect people. It is a tribal instinct.
Tuning in to your senses and confirming them with a gut response is where you’ll derive your satisfaction. Otherwise, you risk being taken for granted. Indeed, there is a risk that you’ll overreach by putting others before yourself. In relationships, this can lead to an imbalance with partners, so you must ensure that you receive as much as you give.
You are someone who is here to immerse yourself in the discoveries of life — if only you can ditch the attached expectations. These days, everyone wants guarantees of success before committing, but with this channel, you’re designed to dive in without thinking and derive the value of the experience itself. Your word is your bond and you wish to live in a community called Trust and Fairness, viewing the world as a large family. As you seek purpose in life, you need like-minded allies who support your goals. You build bonds on the foundations of trust and honesty, where everyone pitches in and pulls his or her weight. These values underpin all your relationships and associations. This channel is tribal, and you need the right company if fulfillment and success are to be achieved. If you fall in with the wrong people, life tends to go pear shaped.
Your aim is to bring everyone onto the same page, using the same values, desires, and emotions to build a strong, interconnected family, marriage, business, or community. You are the parent whose heart swells when everyone gathers together for a family dinner or when a marriage is built on a mutual sense of give-and-take.
So dramatic are your mood swings that you can sometimes struggle to get a handle on matters. Whereas the 12-22 has an ability to express emotions via the Throat, you don’t have that natural outlet. Instead, your emotions are stirred by pressure from the Root, driving them nowhere — except inside you! It’s not so much an emotional wave you experience but an emotional spike, like markings on the Richter scale. And yet this intense drive means you are passionate about anything you do, digging deep to give your all and best.
When you’re down in the dumps, no one can help you feel better, regardless of their best efforts, and this can be distressing for partners, who may struggle to understand. That’s why I tell people with this channel to find a space all their own to which they can withdraw. Your mood will shift when it is good and ready. These are the seasons of your emotions you must learn to accept.
This is the third format channel, and it implies that everything in your life happens in cycles, ranging from days to weeks to years. Some lives are ruled by five- or seven-year cycles. If you were to look back on your life, you, too, would be able to identify a sequence of cycles. One friend with the 42-53 had a Human Design reading and noticed that all his relationships, job changes, and house moves fell into five-year cycles. They were, he said, “the changing seasons” within his life.
The Channel of Cycles is like a book: it has a beginning, middle, and end, and you only want to select it from the bookshelf if you’re going to complete it. There’s no point getting halfway through and losing interest. And so it is with the story of your life — careers, locations, partnerships, and marriages. You will feel a pressure to perform or get involved in many things, but only select those that resonate clearly with you. Then, don’t fret about how the story ends; just enjoy the journey. If the 24-61 is about rationalizing and tracking down reason, the 47-64 is about making sense of the sometimes incomprehensibly profound, with questions such as “What is the meaning of life?”
All thirty-six channels form the pathways linking the energy within all of us, the inner wiring that makes us individual. Some people can have no active channels, or just one, and others can, theoretically, have up to seventeen. Quantity is unimportant. What matters is the information that makes you uniquely you.
Also remember that, because our designs are forever interacting, your inactive channels will mesh with the active channels in others, so you’ll intermittently feel their varying influences. Just remain aware of what is consistent within your design.
And such potential synergy becomes even more relevant as we examine those channels where the color runs only to a halfway point. Because this means we’re starting to open the sixty-four “gates of truth.”

What is particularly fascinating here is that research has already informed the world that there is a direct link between the sixty-four hexagrams of the I Ching and the sixty-four genetic codons, a discovery made by a German physician, Dr. Martin Schönberger, who explained his findings in his 1973 book, The Hidden Key to Life. He demonstrated, by drawing specific parallels, the similarities between the structure of a hexagram and the syntax of DNA.
What needs to be noted is this: the numbers scattered around the body within the life chart represent gates 1 through 64. Everybody’s design has these numbers in exactly the same location. If there is a colored section running from a number to halfway along the channel, this means that gate is activated, representing an embedded part of your makeup. If there is no color emanating from a number, that gate is not activated and is not an embedded part of your makeup. In Human Design, we call this an “electromagnetic connection” because it is seen as an interaction where there is a magnetism. It can feel like a rush of energy in an otherwise quiet part of your being. The more of these connections there are in a relationship, the more intense the chemistry. What I would say is that no relationship would want too many of these connections, though, because they can cause an overload of electricity leading to blowouts that are not conducive to long-term love.
I always say that shared gates provide the essential glue that holds a relationship or friendship together when the going gets tough. It suggests the compatibility and strong foundations on which any association can thrive. So if you ever ask yourself, “What do we have in common?” these are the areas that provide the clearest answer. I would suggest that a sound partnership is when there is a healthy mix of both friendships and electromagnetics — then you really are on a firm footing.
If any gate is colored black to halfway across the channel, it indicates a conscious trait in you whose meaning and influence should be readily obvious to you. If it’s colored pink, the trait is unconscious in you and probably more recognizable to friends and family. The striped combination of pink and black signals unconscious aspects with a conscious overlay; you are part aware, part not and have the means to observe and utilize your unconscious attributes consciously.
When no gates are on in a center, that center is referred to as “open” as well as undefined, bringing an extra dimension to its meaning. This also makes it extra sensitive to the conditioning influences of other designs. Each footnote, therefore, will explain what each open center means.
Gate 4 The Gate of Mental Solutions
With this gate on, your mind must be kept active and must have something to resolve, be it a crisis at work or a drama in someone’s life.
But when your mind cannot grasp something, you can become anxious. With such pressure, there is a tendency to get overly fixated about the worth of your solutions. So learn to lighten up. A brilliant mind can be a great gift or too clever for its own good.
Sometimes, people don’t seek a solution; they just want to get something off their mind. What the solution mechanism within gate 4 needs is the fuel of problems, be they real or perceived. So what you need to do is sort the wheat from the chaff and focus on the relevant matters in life. What solutions do you really need? This is your pathway to increased satisfaction.
Gate 17 The Gate of the Following
Gate 17 is not afraid of being strongly opinionated but also entertains a broad spectrum of views about all aspects of life. So you love nothing more than your opinions being tested and can encourage fair debate that hears both sides of any story. This logical thinking allows a fostering of cooperation and understanding between all opposing sides and foes, be that in your own circles or the world at large. And in all situations you can be both forceful and fair.
The flip side is that you sometimes become dogmatic and fixed in your views. But your mind just needs to remain open without attachment to any strident views.
Gate 24 The Gate of Returning
This gate returns to rake over old ground in a bid to rationalize everything. It is engaged in constant rewind and review, like a spool of tape playing over and over until continual refinement leads to the ultimate answer. You have an intense, preoccupied, forensic mind that always insists on returning to the starting point of a situation to determine its worth, find a missing clue, or understand a key message.
This means you can become set in your ways, holding on to old perspectives because you know them so well. What you must realize is that the Mind is a thought-process factory and
should be kept open to process new materials and new possibilities. Otherwise, your mind will forever spin in circles and get nowhere.
So eliminate old ways and ideas and see the fresh turning points in life. Embrace them and, as with cleaning a dirty window, you’ll get a fresh view of your life.
With no gates on, the Mind center is open as well as undefined, making you, quite literally, the most open-minded person of all. You can sometimes feel overwhelmed by everyone else’s thoughts and you’re always picking up on a thought or idea that is thrown your way and deciding whether it is worthy of investigation. This openness means your mind is capable of profound reflection on what everyone else is thinking about.
Gate 56 The Gate of the Wanderer
Consequently, home is wherever you lay your hat. I suspect you don’t like sticking around one place or project too long — until you reach the time to put down roots. In the meantime, your thirst for traveling is not about attaining goals but about enjoying the experience.
You also tend to arouse feedback from your audiences to challenge your own beliefs. Why would you do that? Basically, because you some times feel lost in your own life and seek reassurance, like any true wanderer. You can even provide dramatic embellishment to add to the purpose — which is to stimulate and provoke others into discovering something more about life through what you experience.
Gate 2 The Gate of Receptivity You know your true direction in life. Getting there is the issue. But, as they say don’t waste time worrying about the “how”; just focus on the vision and allow a resolute purpose to guide you.
Gate 7 The Gate of Uniformity You are a natural authority and leader, directing everyone to the same page to work toward a common understanding and purpose. You are unlikely to be the ruler of your world, more the efficient general or manager who shoulders responsibility for how things are organized.
Gate 10 The Gate of Behavior You tend to have a unique, individual expression of behavior, stemming from a self-respect that is unafraid of what anyone else thinks. Gate 10 represents a love for the journey of life and behaves in a way that is good for you — and you alone. How you behave, especially under pressure, is dependent on a sliding scale of self-worth, but you would hate to know your actions had done you an injustice or let others down. Indeed, you like to think your unique expression and approach can positively influence how others behave around you.
This is one of four “love gates,” and the Universe’s intention is for you to bask in self-love and love life itself. In a sense, having this gate allows you to withstand all the bumps along your way, accepting any indignities heaped on you and staying true to your own vision and trust in life — and yourself.
Gate 13 The Gate of the Listener Now, are you sitting comfortably and are you listening? It’s a stupid question, really, because of course you’re listening. It’s in your nature — you are a born Listener.
