what does seem to be clear is that large amounts of refined sugar, deep-fried foods, and heavily processed foods are unhealthy. Apart from that, eating a variety of different foods, in moderation, and eating more vegetables than the average American currently consumes, all appear to contribute to longevity and health. Reducing the use of tobacco and alcohol is also indicated. After reviewing hundreds of papers, I find that the best dietary advice for older adults is the much-quoted phrase in Michael Pollan’s 2008 book In Defense of Food: “Eat food. Not too much.
