Were this to occur, the Higgs field would not change its value across all of space simultaneously. Instead, in some tiny region singled out by the random nature of quantum events, the Higgs would make its move, tunneling through the barrier to a different value. Then, much as a marble that tunnels through a champagne flute will drop to a lower height, the Higgs field’s value would drop to a lower energy.
