“My man, of course. Peacock. You haven’t met him, I think? Very discreet. He, ah, lurked in the kitchen and, may I say, finished my Times crossword while he waited, piling humiliation on top of embarrassment.” “Good,” Will said. “I hope you never get a seven across again. Arsehole.”

Kim sighed. “Fate, then. Our wills and fates do so contrary run, and you are the most contrary of Wills.”

“But he doesn’t talk to me either, not properly. I understand him by looking at the holes in what he says, and you’ve been nothing but holes since New Year.”

“Consequences happen,” Kim said. “Sometimes officially, sometimes not. Jobs are lost. Bank accounts are emptied. Words are dropped in ears, and decisions are made to leave the country and start a new life in South America. The passive voice does a lot of work in my line.”

Homes with names. He resented that to an irrational degree. Numbers were good enough for most people, or descriptive names like Bluebell Cottage or what-have-you, but of course the posh lot needed houses with their own identity, ones so big they were marked on maps. Wankers.

I loved everything about this little rant.
