With a brow raise and a quick study of my face, she looks for proof that I’m not the asshole I appear to be. Keep looking, Angel. You may find it. My heart pounds as I hold my breath, waiting for her to see past my walls to my true feelings. I want her to know as much as I don’t.
I didn’t know what I’d do or say when I stepped into her room, but the second I saw her wrecked and so fucking vulnerable, instincts kicked in. The instinct to kill to protect what’s mine. I will protect her. I’ll hunt down anyone who wants to cause her harm and end them before they can touch a single strand of her silky raven hair or bring another tear to her eyes. When it comes to protecting my Angel, I’ll have no mercy.
I have to hold out, focus. She can’t distract me. I must behave as though she isn’t my world.
Coach pulls out one of my air pods. “Who are you?” “Gabriel.” “Gabriel who?” “Gabriel No Mercy Stone!” “Who are you?!” Coach, Walker, and Jonah all ask as one voice. “Gabriel.” “Gabriel who?!” they ask. “Gabriel No Fucking Mercy Stone!” I roar.
