“Can’t you just thank me for opening the door for you?” “Oh.” I stepped forward, brushing past him, blushing furiously again because what the heck was wrong with me when I was around this guy? “Thanks for opening the door for me.” “And for walking you home.” “You just said you weren’t walking me home.” “Thank me anyway.”
“You tell everyone to call you Fitz.” “You tell everyone to call you Mae.” “You can call me Mae if you want to.” “I don’t want to.” “Why not?” “I don’t know.” He shrugged. “I don’t like to follow the herd.”
“You never answered. What makes you so sure you’ll win the fight against the boyfriend you think I have?” “Because, Mae.” He yawned. “I’d be fighting for you.”
“Hey, Mae.” He cupped my chin and brought my gaze to his. He moved closer, the tip of his nose brushing mine, his lips barely touching mine. “If you were mine, I’d make it so that you never have any doubts.” “You can’t promise that.” “I won’t promise that. I’ll just show you.”
“I’m not letting you go.” His eyes popped open, meeting mine as he pulled out and thrust again. “I never want to let you go.”
“We spend one night together and you’re already planning out my entire day?” He grinned. “Careful. I’ll plan out your entire life if you let me.”
“Oh, Mae.” He sighed into the phone. “How could you be a footnote when you’re the whole damn textbook?”
“But I’m sad.” I blinked. My eyes filled with tears again. “All the time. All the time I’m just . . . sad.” “Yet you’re still my happy.” I shook my head. The tears began trickling down my cheeks. “I’m never leaving,” he said.
