“I want you to make sure Dean moves on. He is far too young not to experience love again. He is far too beautiful, inside and out, not to be admired. I know my husband. He wants to be a martyr. To show me that he cares, that I was—am, am—” She coughed again, her voice strained. “—the only person for him. But it’s a title I never claimed. I know his love for me is the Big Bang. I don’t mind him settling on another quiet planet afterwards. He needs to move on, Luna.”
I’d kissed a girl. And, pardon the poor cultural reference, but I’d liked it.
“Dreams are just our reality on hold, Moonshine.”
“You only get one life, Luna. One stab at this thing called happiness. Why deprive yourself of things you want just because they weren’t given to you the way you hoped for them to come? Life is like a book, a long chain of scenes threaded together by circumstances and fate. You never know how thick or thin your book is, so you better make the most out of every scene, enjoy each chapter.”
“If you think you’ve found something good without anything bad in it, it just means you haven’t examined it close enough.”
“I need you to do this for my peace of mind.” Her gaze cut to mine, her blue eyes shining with emotion. “From a selfish point of view, I want you to win Luna back, because knowing you two are together would make me so happy.”
“I love your brother and your father more than I love myself. I would die for them. Fight for them until the bitter end. Go against the whole world for them. But you…” She dragged her face up to look at me. Her eyes were full of tears. “I’ve always loved you just a tiny bit more. My regal, rebel boy. My legendary hellraiser, my sad prince, my unlikely savior, my beautiful, broken Knight.”
“What if tomorrow never comes?” I whispered. “Then, my darling boy, we’ll make the best of today.”
“You’re mine,” he stated. “Always fucking have been, Luna. Say it.”
“I’ve only ever been yours, Knight.”
“I want to be your girlfriend.”
He stroked my hair and kissed the crown of my head. “Don’t be scared, my love. I promise I will watch over you, even when you’re there and I’m here. I promise this is not the end. I promise to come look for you in heaven. And if I’m destined to go the other way, I assure you, I’ll find someone to bribe so we can be roommates in hell.”
“The sun will shine tomorrow, my love. I know.”
“Knight, Lev, Rosie asked me to tell you about this moment. Said it was the moment she realized she was in love with your father. But she chose not to do anything about it, because she loved her sister just as much. This is a message from post-life Rosie to you, in her own words:
‘Don’t be a Rosie. Be a Dean. If you want something, no matter what it is, go for it. Falling in love is rare.’”
Luna’s eyes were now on Knight, only Knight, and something in the room shifted. She wasn’t merely speaking th...

Her eyes clung to Knight, and for the first time—for the very first time since I’d known my own son—there were tears in his eyes. It gut-pu...

“So…is that a yes or a no? Because Dixie’s been filming this whole thing outside, and I don’t know how much memory her phone has.”
A burst of laughter rang in the air. I was pleasantly surprised that some of it was mine.
“Yes!” I shouted. “Yes, I’d love to b...

I decided to complete his sentence, the way I’d imagined it in my head so many years ago. “I choose you.”
