It is widely misunderstood that ‘Brahmin’ is a homogeneous category. On the contrary, it is hugely divided along approximately 500 sub-castes, class and regional lines. Addressing a conference hosted by the Belgaum District Depressed Classes in 1929, Ambedkar referred to the hegemony of Maharashtrian Brahmins in the political affairs of the state.
