Lord, Teach Us To Pray

It is only the Spirit of God can enable us to do it aright.

and make me kneel before Thee in true teachableness and poverty of spirit.

In the Old Testament all was shadow and promise; Jesus brought and gives the reality, the substance, of things hoped for.

Let there be the deep confession of our inability to bring God the worship that is pleasing to Him; the childlike teachableness that waits on Him to instruct us; the simple faith that yields itself to the breathing of the Spirit.

and let the infinite Fatherliness of God's Heart be my joy and strength for a life of prayer and of worship. Amen.

As a father pitieth his children, so the Lord pitieth you.

to address God as their Father. The invocation places us at once in the centre of the wonderful revelation the Son came to make of His Father as our Father too.

'Our Father which art in heaven.' Then we are indeed within the veil, in the secret place of power where prayer always prevails.

In true worship the Father must be first, must be all.

And wherever faith has accepted the Father's love, obedience accepts the Father's will. The surrender to, and the prayer for a life of heaven-like obedience, is the spirit of childlike prayer.
