My mind snagged on the way Tory had looked when he’d pulled her out of that pool and a sliver of ice trickled down my spine. I didn’t want to think about that. I didn’t want to remember the way her heart had been beating too slowly when I’d strained my ears to listen for it. I didn’t want to think about the way she’d kept her eyes to the floor instead of glaring right back at us. We’d needed to break them. It had to be done. So why does it make me feel like a piece of shit?
I knew that what had happened tonight had been necessary in a way, but it also didn’t seem right to me. The Vampire Code forbade me from torturing my Source, so I hadn’t had anything to do with what they’d done to Tory; I hadn’t even known what they had planned until it was underway. But even though I could claim to have been nothing more than a witness I still felt...kinda shitty.
“Do you think I enjoyed doing that?” he demanded. “Do you think I want to be terrorising people and preying on their worst fears? You think I don’t realise what that makes me? Who that makes me?”
“How many times have we sat around this room and discussed all the things we don’t like about the way our parents rule?” I hissed. “And yet at the first real test of our claim, we bow to their way of doing things.”
I didn’t want to be around the other Heirs right now. Hell, I wasn’t sure I even wanted to be around myself.
My face was clean of make-up but seemed somehow shadowed like the darkness of last night had seeped into my skin. Never to be washed away.
“Fae fight for their place in the world, Blue. They don't ever bow out of a fight. If the Heirs have beaten you, then you're not one of us. And you never were.”

“What are you waiting for?” she demanded, reaching out to grab my wrist. “Help him!” I snatched my arm back out of her grasp. “No,” I said simply, my voice firm and offering no room for negotiation.
“I don’t have to,” I said. “And after last night, I’ve had more than enough water to last me a lifetime. I don’t feel like conjuring any more of it.”
“Well when I needed his help, he told me I’d have to force it from him. So I think I’ll be giving the same answer,” I replied icily.
I was absolutely done with just rolling over and taking shit from the Heirs. What they’d done to me and Darcy on the night of the party was beyond unforgivable. If they wanted to make enemies of us then they had thoroughly succeeded. Now we just needed to find ways to strike back at the rest of them.
I’ve got absolutely nothing to say to you. I don't know if you’ve forgotten, but you and your twisted bunch of friends almost killed me the night before last, so I have less than zero interest in spending any time in your company.”
“Oh, how noble. I can’t say I felt particularly protected in that pool though. I was half dead when Orion dragged me out of there.” “They wouldn’t have killed you,” he said, though his voice held a note of hesitation which made me think he wasn’t entirely sure about that.
“Well don’t go to any special lengths on my account. I don’t want to be your Source and if that’s the only reason you have for not being a psychopath then it’s nothing to be proud of. Why don’t you just relieve me of your so-called bond and then you can have free rein to be as much of an asshole as the rest of your friends and I won’t have to endure the feeling of your mouth on my skin again.”
“I didn’t come here to argue with you, Tory. I want you to know that what happened the other night didn’t make me feel good about anything. Fae have to claim their power and fight for their position but you’re supposed to do that one on one. The way they ganged up on you... You know you broke through the ice while it was just Max controlling it? It took Darius’s power combined with his to trap you beneath it.”
“Well, you already knew I was stronger than all of you. It’s our lack of training that puts us at a disadvantage. It might be worth reminding your little friends of that, because just as soon as I get a lock on how to use my magic against the four of you, I’ll be doing it. And I hear payback’s a real bitch.”
I wanted revenge, pure and simple. I wanted to claim my place back in this world and prove to everyone in it that I deserved to be here. That I was Fae, and I wouldn’t let anyone tell me otherwise ever again. If that meant the Heirs came at us twofold, then so be it.
A small part of me felt sorry for her but after what she'd done to me, I smothered that thought with a pillow until it suffocated to death.
A smile played around Orion's mouth, and he met my gaze for half a second, making me grin even wider.
We were chased by a Nymph!? Holy shit.
Orion's hot date is part of the Fae Investigation Bureau?? “Sorry to intrude, Lance,” she said and something about the way she spoke his name made my hackles raise. “Is everything alright, Francesca?” Orion asked, his voice velvet smooth. They’re definitely fucking each other. And I definitely don’t care.
“I don't like the look of the fire in your eyes, babe,” he growled. “Didn't I break you well enough?” I stepped further into his personal space, my heart racing, and my shoulders trembling. “Iron is made stronger in the hottest part of the fire, Seth. You didn't break me, you forged me.”
“What would I do without you?” I asked. “Take more of your own beatings from your father for a start,” he replied. The smile fell from my face at that comment, and I turned away to look out of the window instead of responding.
I felt guilty enough that I had to drag him away from his life every time I had to go home and knowing that I was putting him closer to my father’s rage only compounded my guilt. But if I showed up at home without Lance in tow, Father would punish us both mercilessly for it.
I ran a thumb over the mark of his star sign on my forearm for a moment as I considered everything he’d lost for my father’s desires. It wasn’t like I would have wanted anyone else to be in his position; Lance was practically a brother to me; I more than trusted him with my life. But I never would have stolen his life from him like this to bind him to mine.
The Orions and Acruxes were bound by more than the stars. We were bound by power and greed, our families' gifts used for each other's benefit.
They’d come at one of the most powerful Fae in the academy, hell in the country, but why? Who would be that stupid? Who would risk my wrath when I caught them? The only people I could even think of who hated me enough to want to come at me like that were the Vegas, but the idea of them striking back at me was ridiculous.
“A guard dog with poisonous teeth which can kill even the strongest of Fae in less than fifteen minutes,” Geraldine said in a matter-of-fact tone which couldn’t really be counted as a threat but still made Max’s frown deepen.
“What’s an Elysian Mate?” I asked with a frown. “Gah you’re so ignorant it kills me! It’s like your one true love.
Besides, the knowledge that Tory knew his darkest secret was probably enough to torture him psychologically.
“Any teacher who crossed that line wouldn’t just be fired, they'd be power shamed by the Celestial Council. Stripped of their rank in the whole of Solaria. Can you imagine?”
“No, Darcy, it's worse than you think. The whole Fae world would turn their back on you.”
“Because you're beautiful and every time you're in a room he stares at you. And when you're not there he can't stop looking at that disgusting bracelet of hair he made. He wants you to bow to him, but given half a chance he'd have it both ways and have you under his arm too,”
“But I learned a long time ago that blood doesn't define a person, so I shouldn't have judged you so quickly. You're unlucky to bear the title that you do. And I would never bow to either of you for many reasons. But you aren't bad people. That being said...” His eyes travelled down me, the sensation of a zip opening along the line he cast with his eyes. “I will do whatever it takes to ensure Darius and the other Heirs sit on the throne of Solaria. And I urge you to never underestimate that vow.”
“Thanks for the advice, Professor, but we’ve never needed anybody else to look out for us before so I’m not going to start expecting it now.”
It was like he’d waited for me to walk away and was now following me.
“Look no further! Geraldine Grus is a firm friend and trustworthy protector of the true Heirs to the throne of Solaria. Your scandal is my scandal, your war is my war, and your enemy is my enemy. Darius Acrux should burn in the fiery pits of the afterlife for what he did to you. If he was on fire and I was in my Cerberus form, I wouldn’t even extinguish the flames with my urine. Please allow me to assist you with my earth magic, your highnesses.”

This wasn’t the first time I’d seen him while I was out running, and I was starting to get the feeling that he was following me.
“Because you’re a Libra,” I said. “And you’ve got matching best friends forever tattoos, I just thought it was a bit strange.”
