“Are you coming in or not?” Rhys responded to the invitation like a horse to a gunshot at a race. He lurched forward, gathered me up in his arms, and kicked the door closed behind us as he walked me backward into my kitchen.
“Maybe.” “There are only yes or no questions here, baby.” I shivered. “Yes.”
He looked me up and down. “I definitely want to be the guy.” “You do?” “Yes. So long as you want me to be the guy.” “I do.” “You’re sure?” I nodded.
“Look at yourself, Vanny. You’re beautiful. Classy. Sexy as hell. You’re not trying too hard. You’re just owning who you are.”
“Will you quit playing hard to get?”
He nipped at my lips. “You’re killing me.”
“Vanny,” Rhys whispered. He pressed his thumb to my bottom lip. “Don’t push me away.”
She owned part of me. I didn’t know how she’d done it, but she had. Part of me was hers. It had been for a while. And now she was walking away with it.
“Vanessa Hampton is one of the good ones. Try not to fuck it up. Hmm?” I resisted the urge to tell him I wasn’t a fool and that I knew that already.
If all went well tonight, I’d be able to really call her mine when it was all said and done. No more fake rings and fake dating. It could be real.
This thing was real.
They’re looking for love. And so am I. And we have it, Vanny. You and I. We have it and I know you know it. Are you really going to stand in the way of real love when it comes knocking on your door?”
think about you every day, Vanny. I can’t wrap my head around why we’re not together. Because we’re made for each other. I know it and you know it. And if you’re scared, I understand. I’m scared too. But please. Don’t give up on us before we even had a chance to really see what we could be.”
“I’m in love with you, Vanny. There it is. Plain and simple. I’ve loved you since we had pizza that night after Caprizee. Maybe since I saw you in that velvet dress at the bar. I was too dumb to see it then but I see it now. And I haven’t stopped loving you since, and I haven’t seen you in six months. How is that possible? This is the real deal.
We’re… we’re going to have a baby.” A smile touched her lips. “Holy shit. We’re going to have a baby.” I grabbed her and pulled her in tightly.
She was radiant. She was full and supple and wonderful and even more beautiful than I ever remembered. She smelled like peppermint and sunshine and lavender. She tasted like vanilla and cinnamon. And she was carrying our child.
The girl was mine. After all this, I finally had her back.
I don’t want you to ever doubt me again. I will be by your side until the day I die. No matter what. Because you are my life, Vanessa Hampton. You and that precious little baby in your belly. So on that note.” Rhys slid off his chair. It slid back across the hardwood floor. And he took a knee.
“Vanessa Hampton, I already gave you a ring once. But that was just a practice round. This is the real deal. This is yours. And so am I if you’ll have me. You’re everything to me. I love you and I want to spend every day showing you just how special you are and how much you deserve. Vanny, will you marry me?”
He pressed his forehead to mine. “Believe it. It’s me and you forever now.”
don’t know about forever. That’s a long time.” He chuckled. “Woman, don’t play with me like that. You’re mine and I’m never letting go. You hear me?”
“I love you, Rhys Daniels.” His smile was as bright as our future. “I love you too, future Mrs. Daniels. Forever. No matter what.”
