Suddenly her door opened. Mason leaned in. “It’s not okay,” he snapped. “But it’s the job. I’ll contact you later.”
And he kissed her. As in he placed his lips on hers, her body temperature shot up ten degrees and curled her toes. Then he backed up and slammed the door in her face. She gave a happy sigh and settled back for the trip. He did care.
Hawk came to the open door and held out his arms. Mason snorted as Tesla fell into them. She appeared to like being carried around – at times at least. “Thank you for being so smart, so talented, and so damn capable,” Hawk said and hugged her hard against his chest.
Then he tossed her to Swede.
The group fell silent as two stretchers carefully brought out their fallen comrades. A reminder of how precious life really was.
She looked so damn lost in the hospital bed. As if he was leaving her. Which he was. Damn. He strode back and picked her up. This time he kissed her like he wanted to. He kissed her like he’d been wanting to do since he’d first seen her. He poured all the heat and longing he could pour into the simple movement.
Mason had never been more proud of anyone in his life.
She was something. And what she was – was his. She just didn’t know it yet.
“She’s one of us now.”
“And on top of all of those, she’s got heart,” Mason admitted. “And a lot of it. She’s SEAL through and through.”
“It’s too damn late for all of you,” snarled Mason, his voicing thundering as he added, “I’m keeping her.” Silence. And he turned around, a frown on his livid face. “Now if only she’d stop going missing!”
