At the more liberal end of the spectrum are those who believe, in line with functionalism, that consciousness is simply a matter of the right kind of information processing. This information processing need not be identical with ‘intelligence’, but it is information processing nonetheless, and therefore is the sort of thing that can be implemented in computers.
