while current organoids are highly unlikely to be conscious, the question will remain disconcertingly open as the technology develops. This brings us back to a need for preventative ethics. The possibility of organoid consciousness has ethical urgency not only because it cannot be ruled out, but because of the potential scale involved. As the organoid researcher Alysson Muotri has said, ‘We want to make farms of these organoids.’
